Your compliance partner

Contractors and Freelancers Compliance

Between IR35, Self Assessment, VAT and Companies House, compliance can become a constant worry. We handle the paperwork, deadlines and HMRC requirements so you can focus on your work.

What is IR35, and why does it matter?

IR35, also known as the off-payroll working rules, stops people who work like employees from cutting their tax simply by invoicing through their own limited company. Outside IR35, you can pay yourself tax-efficiently. Inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted from your fees, much like PAYE.

Since April 2021, medium and large private-sector clients must decide your status and issue a Status Determination Statement (SDS). Getting it wrong can lead to backdated tax, National Insurance, interest and penalties.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is IR35, and does it apply to me?

IR35 applies if you work through an intermediary such as a personal service company and, based on the real working relationship, would be treated as an employee by HMRC.

How do I know if I’m inside or outside IR35?

It depends on the actual working relationship, not the contract wording. The key factors are control, substitution and mutuality of obligation. An expert review gives the most reliable answer.

Do I need to register with Companies House as a freelancer?

Not as a sole trader, where you register with HMRC for Self Assessment instead. Companies House registration is only needed for a limited company.

What happens if I miss my Self Assessment deadline?

HMRC charges an initial £100 penalty, even if no tax is due, with further penalties after three, six and twelve months. Contact us early.

Can you handle VAT registration for me?

Yes. We confirm whether you need to register, apply for you, advise on the Flat Rate Scheme and file returns through MTD-compatible software.

What happens if HMRC investigates my IR35 status?

HMRC may request contracts, invoices and evidence of how you work. Our specialists prepare your documentation, handle correspondence and represent you.
